What is Medigap, and how is it different from Medicare Advantage in Louisiana?
Medigap is a private insurance policy that works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to pay some of the deductibles, coinsurance and copayments Medicare does not. It is not Medicare Advantage. With Original Medicare plus a Medigap plan, a person uses their red, white and blue Medicare card at any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare, and the Medigap policy pays its share of the Medicare-approved charges. Medicare Advantage (Part C), by contrast, replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that typically has its own network and its own rules; a person cannot use both a Medigap and a Medicare Advantage plan at the same time.
Medigap plans are standardized by federal letter, so Plan G from one company covers the same Medicare cost-sharing items as Plan G from another. Premiums, customer service and underwriting rules can differ.

When is the Medigap Open Enrollment Period in Louisiana, and why does it matter?
A person's one-time, federally protected Medigap Open Enrollment Period is six months long and starts the first month they are both age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During that window, any Medigap policy an insurer sells in Louisiana must be issued at the same price offered to healthy applicants of the same age, regardless of health history. Outside that window, insurers in most situations may use medical underwriting, which can mean higher premiums or a denial. The six-month clock does not reset, so marking the start date matters.
What happens in Louisiana if my Medicare Advantage plan is not returning for 2027?
According to CMS Landscape files, 20 Medicare Advantage plans offered somewhere in Louisiana in 2026 will not be offered anywhere in the state in 2027. Members of a non-returning plan have a federal guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap plans without medical underwriting, within set time limits around the plan's end date. The non-renewal notice from the plan explains the dates. People in this situation can call 1-800-MEDICARE or use Medicare.gov to confirm which Medigap letters qualify under guaranteed issue and the deadline that applies.
Does Medigap in Louisiana cover prescription drugs?
No. Medigap plans sold today do not include prescription drug coverage, so a Louisianan with Original Medicare and a Medigap plan who wants drug coverage picks a stand-alone Medicare Part D plan separately. For 2027, Medicare's out-of-pocket cap on covered Part D drugs is $2,400 (up from $2,100 in 2026), the most any Part D plan may charge as a deductible is $700, and the Part D base beneficiary premium used in the late-enrollment penalty calculation is $41.33. Actual plan premiums are set plan by plan. Annual Enrollment 2027 runs October 15 – December 7, 2026, with choices taking effect January 1, 2027.
How should I compare Medigap policies in Louisiana?
Start with the plan letter, because benefits are standardized within a letter, then compare premiums and the insurer's track record. The Medigap policy search on Medicare.gov lists the insurers available for a specific ZIP code and the letters each sells; price quotes come from the insurer or a licensed agent. Ask how the insurer prices the plan (for example, by age at issue versus attained age), how often rates have changed, and whether a household or similar discount applies. Plan details come from the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or the plan's or insurer's own documents.
Where can Louisianans get free help with Medicare questions?
Medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) are the two free, official sources. Medicare.gov's Plan Finder compares Part D and Medicare Advantage plans; the Medigap policy search lists supplement insurers by ZIP code. For questions on enrollment periods, late-enrollment penalties, or guaranteed-issue rights after a plan non-renewal, 1-800-MEDICARE can confirm what applies to a specific situation.
