Here is what South Carolina readers should know as Annual Enrollment 2027 (October 15 – December 7, 2026) approaches.
What is Medigap and how is it different from Medicare Advantage in South Carolina?
Medigap is private insurance that works with Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to help pay costs like coinsurance and some deductibles. It is not the same as Medicare Advantage. With Medicare Advantage, a private plan replaces the way you get your Part A and Part B benefits and usually has a network. With Medigap, you keep Original Medicare and can generally see any provider in the country who accepts Medicare, with the Medigap policy picking up a defined share of the gaps.
Medigap policies sold today are standardized by the federal government and labeled with letters. Every insurer's "Plan G," for example, covers the same federally defined benefits, though prices and customer service can vary. Plans C and F are closed to people who became newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.
Which insurers sell Medigap in South Carolina, and which plan letters do they offer?
For ZIP code 29401, Medicare.gov's Medigap policy search lists 25 insurers. What is actually available can differ by ZIP code and by age, sex and tobacco use, so your own search may look different. Across the listed insurers, the plan letters sold by at least one company are A, B, C, D, F, F-HD, G, G-HD, K, L, M and N.

When is my Medigap Open Enrollment Period in South Carolina, and why does it matter?
Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, six-month window that starts the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During that window, you have a federal right to buy any Medigap policy sold in South Carolina regardless of your health, and the insurer cannot charge more because of pre-existing conditions.
Once that window closes, insurers in most situations can use medical underwriting — meaning they can ask health questions and decide whether to issue a policy and at what price. That is why the six-month window matters so much.
What happens to my Medigap options if my Medicare Advantage plan is not returning in South Carolina for 2027?
According to the CMS Landscape files, five Medicare Advantage plans offered in South Carolina in 2026 are not offered anywhere in the state in 2027. If you are enrolled in one of those plans, you have a federal guaranteed-issue right to buy certain Medigap policies without medical underwriting.
Guaranteed-issue rights also apply in other situations — for example, if you move out of your plan's service area or lose certain other coverage. Medicare.gov describes which Medigap plans are available under each guaranteed-issue scenario and the time limits that apply, so check it before you make a move.
Does Medigap cover prescriptions in South Carolina, or do I need a separate Part D plan?
Medigap sold today does not cover prescription drugs. If you want drug coverage with Original Medicare and a Medigap policy, you enroll in a stand-alone Medicare Part D plan separately.
A few national Part D facts for 2027 are set: the out-of-pocket cap on covered drugs is $2,400 (up from $2,100 in 2026), the most any Part D plan may charge as a deductible is $700, and the Part D base beneficiary premium — a national figure used in the late-enrollment penalty — is $41.33. Plan premiums are set plan by plan. The Social Security Administration has also announced a 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security benefits payable beginning January 2027.
How do I compare Medigap policies in South Carolina?
Start with the plan letter, because every insurer's version of the same letter covers the same federally defined benefits. From there, the main things that differ are price, how the insurer prices by age over time, customer service and extras the company may add.
Use the Medigap policy search at medicare.gov to see insurers and plans for your own ZIP code; the policy details come from the insurer's own documents. If you also want drug coverage, run a separate search on the Medicare Plan Finder for Part D during Annual Enrollment 2027.
The 2027 Part B standard premium and deductible and the 2027 IRMAA income brackets have not yet been announced; CMS typically releases them in the fall. Watch medicare.gov for those figures.
