Shreveport, La. — If you live in Shreveport and you're weighing your Medicare Advantage choices for 2027, you have a lot to look at. According to the CMS Medicare Advantage Landscape Source File, 40 Medicare Advantage plans from 8 carriers are being offered in Caddo Parish, which is where Shreveport sits. The full list — each plan, its carrier, its plan type, and whether it includes drug coverage — is in the table below.
Key takeaways
- Caddo Parish, where Shreveport is located, has 40 Medicare Advantage plans available for 2027, offered by 8 carriers.
- All 48 of those Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage (MA-PD).
- The plan types break down to 15 HMO plans, 16 HMO-POS plans and 17 PPO plans; 24 of the 48 are Special Needs Plans (SNPs).
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, and Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs Jan. 1 through March 31.
What's on the shelf in Shreveport for 2027
Medicare Advantage availability is set at the county level. Shreveport is in Caddo Parish, and CMS lists 40 MA plans there for the 2027 plan year from these eight carriers, in alphabetical order:
- Aetna (CVS Health) — 5 plans (HMO; 3 SNPs)
- American Health Advantage of Louisiana — 1 plan (HMO; 1 SNP)
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana — 8 plans (HMO-POS, PPO; 1 SNP)
- Centene (WellCare) — 5 plans (HMO-POS; 3 SNPs)
- Elevance Health (Anthem) — 3 plans (HMO; 3 SNPs)
- Humana — 15 plans (HMO, PPO; 5 SNPs)
- Lagniappe Advantage — 1 plan (PPO; 1 SNP)
- UnitedHealthcare — 10 plans (HMO-POS, PPO; 7 SNPs)
The table below lists every plan by carrier, with its plan type and drug-coverage status.
How the plan types differ
You'll see three plan types in Shreveport's lineup: HMO, HMO-POS and PPO.
- HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans usually ask you to use a set network of doctors and hospitals and to pick a primary care doctor.
- HMO-POS (Point of Service) plans work like HMOs but let you go out of network for some services, usually at a higher cost.
- PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans give you more freedom to see out-of-network providers, though staying in-network typically costs less.
Names like "Regional PPO" simply mean the PPO covers a multi-state region rather than a single local service area.
Special Needs Plans, and who they're for
A share of Shreveport's 2027 MA menu is made up of Special Needs Plans (SNPs). SNPs are only for people who fit specific eligibility rules:
- D-SNP (Dual Eligible): for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid.
- C-SNP (Chronic Condition): for people with a qualifying chronic condition, such as diabetes.
- I-SNP (Institutional): for people who live in a nursing home or need that level of care at home.
If you don't qualify for an SNP, you'd choose from the non-SNP plans in the table. If you think you might qualify, your state Medicaid office or SHIP counselor can help confirm.
What about a stand-alone drug plan?
Many of the Medicare Advantage plans in Caddo Parish for 2027 include Part D drug coverage, so if you enroll in one of those, you don't buy a separate drug plan. Stand-alone Part D plans (PDPs) are sold at the state level, not by county, so if you stay with Original Medicare, you'd shop those separately on the Medicare Plan Finder.
A few Part D program facts that apply nationwide in 2027:
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 in 2026 ($2,400 in 2027) for the year.
- The Part D maximum deductible is $615 in 2026 ($700 in 2027).
- The old "donut hole" coverage gap has been eliminated as of 2025 — Part D now has three phases.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your drug costs into monthly payments instead of paying at the pharmacy counter.
Dates to keep on your calendar
- Oct. 15 – Dec. 7: Medicare Annual Enrollment Period. You can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for coverage starting Jan. 1.
- Jan. 1 – March 31: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. If you're already in an MA plan, you can switch to another MA plan or go back to Original Medicare (and add a Part D plan) once during this window.
- IRMAA: Higher-income Part B and Part D surcharges start above $109,000 in income for a single filer in 2026.
How to compare the specifics
Because plan premiums, copays, networks, drug formularies and extra benefits change every year — and vary plan by plan — the fair way to compare them is directly from official sources:
- Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov lets you enter your ZIP code and medications and see costs side by side.
- 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) is open 24/7.
- Louisiana SHIIP (Senior Health Insurance Information Program) offers free, unbiased counseling for Louisiana residents.
- Each plan's own Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage documents spell out its rules in detail.
