For the 2027 plan year, Detroit shoppers have a menu of Medicare Advantage plans to sort through — and it helps to see the whole list in one place before comparing anything else. Detroit sits in Wayne County, and Medicare Advantage availability is set at the county level, so the roster below is what CMS shows for Wayne County residents in 2027.
Key takeaways
- Wayne County, which includes Detroit, has 81 Medicare Advantage plans available for 2027 from 16 carriers.
- The lineup breaks down into 31 HMO plans, 18 HMO-POS plans and 41 PPO plans, with 21 of the 90 designed as Special Needs Plans (SNPs).
- The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7; the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31.
- Availability comes from CMS, but plan details — premiums, copays, networks and drug formularies — should be checked on the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov or in each plan's own documents.
According to the CMS Medicare Advantage Landscape Source File, Wayne County has 81 Medicare Advantage plans from 16 carriers for 2027. The table below lists each plan by carrier, along with its plan type and whether it includes Part D.
What's on the Detroit menu for 2027
The 90 plans in Wayne County come from 16 carriers: Aetna (CVS Health), Align Senior Care, AmeriHealth Caritas VIP Care, Blue Care Network, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Centene (WellCare), HAP CareSource MI Coordinated Health, Health Alliance Plan by Henry Ford Health, Humana, Longevity Health Plan, McLaren Medicare, Molina Healthcare of Michigan, Priority Health Medicare, Trinity Health Plan of Michigan, UnitedHealthcare and Zing Health.
Humana has the largest slate in the county with 16 plans, followed by Health Alliance Plan by Henry Ford Health and Priority Health Medicare with 11 each. Aetna and Zing Health also offer multiple plans, along with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Centene (WellCare), Blue Care Network and UnitedHealthcare. Several carriers — including AmeriHealth Caritas VIP Care, HAP CareSource MI Coordinated Health, Longevity Health Plan and Molina Healthcare of Michigan — offer a single plan aimed at a specific population.
The table below lists every plan, in alphabetical order by carrier.
Understanding the plan types
You'll see three main letters after each plan name: HMO, HMO-POS and PPO. Of the 90 plans in Wayne County, 31 are HMOs, 18 are HMO-POS, and 41 are PPOs.
- HMO (Health Maintenance Organization): You generally use in-network providers and often need a primary care doctor and referrals.
- HMO-POS (Point of Service): An HMO with a limited option to see some out-of-network providers, usually at a higher cost.
- PPO (Preferred Provider Organization): More flexibility to see out-of-network doctors, typically at a higher cost share.
A "Regional PPO" is the same idea, just offered across a broader multi-state region rather than a single county.
Special Needs Plans (SNPs)
Of the 90 plans, 21 are Special Needs Plans. These are Medicare Advantage plans built for people who meet specific criteria. You'll see three types in the Detroit-area roster:
- D-SNPs are for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid. Examples on the Wayne County list include Aetna Medicare HIDE (HMO D-SNP), AmeriHealth Caritas VIP Care (HMO D-SNP), HAP CareSource MI Coordinated Health (HMO D-SNP), Humana Dual Integrated (HMO D-SNP), Molina Dual MI Coordinated Health (HMO D-SNP), PriorityMedicare Dual Premier (HMO D-SNP), UHC Dual Complete MI-Y1 (HMO D-SNP) and Wellcare Meridian Dual Align (HMO D-SNP).
- C-SNPs are for people with certain chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart conditions or chronic kidney disease.
- I-SNPs are for people who live in an institution, such as a nursing facility, or who need a similar level of care at home.
If you don't qualify for one of these categories, an SNP isn't the right fit, and the plan won't accept you.
Drug coverage in 2027
Most of the 81 Medicare Advantage plans in Wayne County for 2027 include Part D prescription drug coverage. Check each plan's listing to confirm whether drug coverage is bundled in.
A few program-wide Part D facts to keep in mind as you compare drug coverage:
- The Part D out-of-pocket cap is $2,100 for 2026. Once you hit that, you pay $0 for covered drugs the rest of the year.
- The maximum Part D deductible any plan can charge is $615 in 2026 ($700 in 2027).
- The old "donut hole" coverage gap was eliminated as of 2025; Part D now has three phases.
- The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread your drug costs across the year in monthly installments instead of paying at the pharmacy counter.
Formularies (the drug lists) differ from plan to plan, so if you take specific medications, checking each plan's formulary is one of the most useful things you can do before enrolling.
How to use this list
The roster below tells you what's available — not what's right for you. To go from a list of 90 plans to a shortlist:
1. Start at medicare.gov and use the Plan Finder. Enter your Detroit ZIP code, your prescriptions and your preferred pharmacies. 2. Check whether your doctors and preferred hospitals are in each plan's network. 3. Look at the plan's Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage for the details Plan Finder doesn't show. 4. If your income is above $109,000 as a single filer in 2026, factor in the IRMAA surcharge on Part B and Part D. 5. Mark the calendar: the Annual Enrollment Period is October 15 – December 7, and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is January 1 – March 31 for people already in a Medicare Advantage plan.
