DETROIT — Fall 2026. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan in Detroit, the mail arriving this month is the start of a short, important season. From October 15 through December 7, 2026, you can switch, drop or join a Medicare Advantage plan for 2027 coverage that begins January 1. In Wayne County — the county Detroit sits in — the 2027 lineup includes 86 Medicare Advantage plans from 16 carriers, with 12 plans new for the year and 16 not returning, according to the CMS Medicare Advantage Landscape Source File. That is a lot to sort through, so here is a plain-English way to compare them before the deadline.
What Detroit's 2027 lineup looks like
Plan availability is set at the county level, so Detroit residents choose from the Wayne County menu. For 2027, that menu holds 86 Medicare Advantage plans from 16 carriers. By plan type: 32 HMOs, 19 HMO-POS plans and 35 PPOs. All 86 include prescription drug coverage.
Twenty-two of those plans are Special Needs Plans (SNPs) built for specific situations: 8 Dual Eligible SNPs (D-SNPs) for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, 11 Chronic Condition SNPs (C-SNPs) for people with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or chronic kidney disease, and 3 Institutional SNPs (I-SNPs). You generally need to qualify to enroll in an SNP.
The 16 carriers offering plans in Wayne County next year, in alphabetical order, are Aetna (CVS Health), Align Senior Care, AmeriHealth Caritas VIP Care, Blue Care Network, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Centene (WellCare), HAP CareSource MI Coordinated Health, Health Alliance Plan by Henry Ford Health, Humana, Longevity Health Plan, McLaren Medicare, Molina Healthcare of Michigan, Priority Health Medicare, Trinity Health Plan of Michigan, UnitedHealthcare and Zing Health. The table below lists every plan by carrier.
What is new for 2027
Three things to know before you open the Medicare Plan Finder:
- 12 plans are new in Wayne County for 2027.
- 16 plans are not returning. If yours is among them, your carrier is required to notify you. You will have a Special Enrollment Period to pick something else.
- Some plans are renamed. A different name on your ID card next year does not necessarily mean a different plan — but the ANOC will spell out what actually changed.
Program-wide, two 2027 Part D figures are also set: the out-of-pocket cap on covered prescriptions rises to $2,400 (from $2,100 in 2026), and the maximum Part D deductible a plan can charge rises to $700 (from $615 in 2026). The 2027 Part B standard premium, deductible and IRMAA income brackets have not been announced yet; CMS typically publishes those in November.
A step-by-step way to compare plans
The goal is not to find the "best" plan in the abstract — it is to find the plan that fits your doctors, your medicines and your budget. Work through these steps in order.
1. Start with the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). Your current plan mailed (or emailed) this document in September. It shows side-by-side what is changing for 2027: premium, deductible, copays, drug tiers, extra benefits and the provider network. If nothing about the 2027 version bothers you, you may not need to switch at all.
2. List what matters to you. Write down your doctors and the hospitals you want to use, every prescription you take (name, dose, how often), and the pharmacy you prefer. Add any benefits you actually use — dental, vision, hearing, transportation, over-the-counter allowance.
3. Go to the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov/plan-compare. Sign in with your Medicare account so your drug list and pharmacy carry over. Enter your Detroit ZIP code to see Wayne County plans.
4. Check doctors and hospitals. For each plan you are considering, confirm your providers are in-network. HMO plans generally require you to stay in-network except for emergencies; PPO plans let you go out-of-network at a higher cost; HMO-POS plans sit in between. Call your doctor's billing office if the online directory is unclear — provider lists can lag.
5. Check your prescriptions and pharmacy. The Plan Finder will estimate your yearly drug costs based on your list. Watch for drugs that are not on the plan's formulary, require prior authorization, or cost less at a "preferred" pharmacy. Mail-order can change the math too.
6. Compare total yearly cost, not just premium. A low-premium plan can cost more overall once you add deductibles, copays and drug costs. The Plan Finder adds these up for you.
7. Note the star ratings and plan type. Star ratings (1 to 5) are CMS's measure of quality and member experience. Use them as one input alongside everything above.
If you need help or want to confirm
For personalized answers, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), available 24/7, or use the chat and comparison tools at medicare.gov. If your plan is leaving Wayne County for 2027, your notice will explain your Special Enrollment Period and your options.
Remember: nothing happens to you if you do nothing. If your current plan is offered again in 2027, you will stay in it with the 2027 changes described in your ANOC. December 7, 2026 is a deadline for changes, not a cliff.
