PITTSBURGH — Fall 2026 is the one stretch of the year when every person on Medicare can take a fresh look at their coverage. The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, and the plan you pick (or keep) takes effect January 1, 2027. In Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh sits, there is a lot to sort through: the CMS Landscape file shows 95 Medicare Advantage plans from 16 carriers available for 2027, including 8 new plans and 9 that will not return.

This guide walks through a plain, repeatable way to compare them — doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, pharmacies, your Annual Notice of Change, and the Medicare Plan Finder — without naming a "winner."

What is changing for Medicare Advantage in Pittsburgh for 2027?

For 2027, Allegheny County will have 95 Medicare Advantage plans from 16 carriers, with 8 new plans, 9 not returning, and some others renamed. By type, the 2027 lineup includes 42 HMO plans, 18 HMO-POS plans, and 35 PPO plans, and 85 of the 95 plans include Part D drug coverage.

That is a slight shift from the 2026 lineup of 96 plans from the same number of carriers. The practical point: even if your plan is returning, its costs, drug list, provider network or extra benefits may look different in 2027. The table below lists every plan available in the county for 2027.

Two program-level numbers are already confirmed for Part D in 2027: the out-of-pocket cap rises to $2,400 (from $2,100 in 2026), and the maximum deductible a plan can charge is $700 (from $615 in 2026). CMS has not yet released the 2027 Part B premium, Part B deductible, or IRMAA brackets; those usually come out in November.

How many Medicare Advantage carriers serve Allegheny County in 2027?

Sixteen carriers will offer Medicare Advantage plans in Allegheny County for 2027. In alphabetical order, they are:

Carrier counts tell you how much choice exists; they do not tell you which plan fits your doctors, drugs or budget.

What plan types and Special Needs Plans are offered in Pittsburgh for 2027?

Three plan structures dominate the 2027 Allegheny County lineup: HMO (42), HMO-POS (18), and PPO (35). HMOs usually ask you to stay in network and pick a primary care doctor. HMO-POS plans add a limited "point of service" option to go out of network for certain services. PPO plans let you see out-of-network providers, usually at a higher cost.

Special Needs Plans (SNPs) serve people with specific situations. For 2027, Allegheny County will have:

If you qualify for one of these, you may have more coordinated benefits available than a general-population plan offers.

How do I compare Medicare Advantage plans in Pittsburgh step by step?

Here is a straightforward way to work through the 2027 options, whether you are keeping your plan or shopping.

1. Read your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). Every plan mails one by late September. It spells out exactly what will change on January 1, 2027 — premium, deductible, copays, drug tiers, pharmacy network, extra benefits. If your plan is in the "9 not returning" group, your ANOC (or a separate non-renewal letter) will say so.

2. List what you actually use. Write down your doctors and specialists, the hospitals you want access to (UPMC, Allegheny Health Network, St. Clair, Heritage Valley, VA, and so on), your current prescriptions with doses, and the pharmacy you prefer.

3. Go to the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov. Enter your ZIP code and your drug list. Plan Finder will show every 2027 Medicare Advantage plan available to you, with the estimated yearly cost for your specific drugs at the pharmacy you choose.

4. Check the provider network for each plan you are serious about. Do not rely on the Plan Finder alone for networks — call the plan or check its online directory, and confirm your doctors and your preferred hospital system are in network for 2027.

5. Check the drug formulary and pharmacy tiers. The same drug can sit on different tiers at different plans, and "preferred" vs. "standard" pharmacy pricing can change your yearly cost.

6. Think about the plan type. If you travel or split time out of state, a PPO may fit better. If you want tight coordination and a single health system, an HMO may fit better.

7. Make the change before December 7, 2026. You can change plans as often as you want during the window; the last choice on file wins.

What happens if I do nothing before December 7, 2026?

If you do nothing, and your current Medicare Advantage plan is being offered again in 2027, you will stay on it — with the premium, deductible, copays, drug list and network described in the Annual Notice of Change. You do not need to re-enroll each year.

If your plan is one of the 9 Allegheny County plans not returning for 2027, your carrier will send a non-renewal notice and you will have a Special Enrollment Period to pick a new plan. Original Medicare also remains an option. There is also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31, 2027, if you are already in an Advantage plan and want to switch once more or go back to Original Medicare.

Frequently asked questions

When is the deadline to pick a 2027 Medicare Advantage plan in Pittsburgh?
The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. A change made in that window takes effect January 1, 2027. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1, you have a second chance from January 1 to March 31, 2027 to switch plans once or return to Original Medicare.
How do I know if my doctor or hospital is in a plan's 2027 network?
Call the plan directly or use its online provider directory, and confirm the year is 2027. Networks can change between plan years, so a doctor who was in network in 2026 may not be in 2027, and vice versa. Medicare.gov's Plan Finder lists plans, but the plan itself is the source of truth for its network.
What is a Special Needs Plan, and do I qualify?
A Special Needs Plan (SNP) is a Medicare Advantage plan built for a specific group. D-SNPs are for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid. C-SNPs are for people with certain chronic conditions, such as diabetes or heart failure. I-SNPs are for people who need a nursing-home level of care. Allegheny County will have 20 D-SNPs, 7 C-SNPs, and 8 I-SNPs for 2027. Your plan or 1-800-MEDICARE can confirm whether you qualify.
Where can I get free, personalized help comparing plans?
Medicare.gov has the Plan Finder tool and plan details, and 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048) is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Both are official and free.
