Key takeaways

  • 15 Medicare Advantage plans are new to Marion County — the county Indianapolis is in — for plan year 2027, from six carriers: Aetna (CVS Health), Devoted Health, Elevance Health (Anthem), Humana, Provider Partners Health Plans and Zing Health.
  • A new plan has no Star Rating yet because CMS rates plans based on past performance; that is a program fact, not a reason to pick it or pass on it.
  • Before December 7, 2026, check any plan against your own doctors and prescriptions using the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE.
  • If you do nothing, your current plan renews for 2027 if it is still offered — read your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) to see what is different.

INDIANAPOLIS — This fall, Marion County seniors shopping for 2027 Medicare Advantage coverage will see some names on the list that were not there a year ago. According to the CMS Medicare Advantage Landscape Source Files, 15 of the 79 Medicare Advantage plans offered in Marion County for 2027 are brand new, coming from six carriers. A new plan can look appealing on paper, but it has no local track record yet — so it deserves an extra round of homework before the Annual Enrollment Period closes on December 7, 2026.

What "new for 2027" means in Marion County

Each year CMS publishes a Landscape Source File that lists every Medicare Advantage plan offered in each county for the coming year. Comparing the 2026 and 2027 files for Marion County shows 15 plans that were not sold here last year. All 15 include drug coverage.

Several of the new plans are Special Needs Plans (SNPs) — plans designed for people with specific chronic conditions (C-SNP), people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid (D-SNP), or people who live in a nursing-home-level setting (I-SNP). You generally need to meet the SNP's eligibility rules to enroll.

The full roster of plans available in Marion County, including the new ones, appears in the table on this page.

Every one of these plans includes Part D drug coverage.

How a new plan is different from one that is renewing

A renewing plan has a history: CMS Star Ratings, past Annual Notices of Change, and your own experience if you have been in it. A plan appearing for the first time in 2027 does not have that record yet. CMS Star Ratings are based on past performance, so a new plan simply will not have one for its first year. That is neither a red flag nor a selling point — it just means you will need to lean more on the plan documents and the Plan Finder, and less on history, when you compare.

The things you can check for a new plan are the same things you should check for any plan: the monthly premium, the drug deductible, the pharmacy and provider networks, the formulary tier your prescriptions fall into, the out-of-pocket maximum, and any extra benefits.

How to vet any plan — new or renewing — before December 7

Give yourself an unhurried hour and work through this short list:

1. Make a list of every prescription you take (name, dose, how often) and every doctor, specialist, hospital and pharmacy you want to keep using. 2. Open the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov. Sign in so your drugs save, enter your ZIP code, and compare plans side by side. The Plan Finder shows each plan's premium, deductible, estimated yearly drug costs for your medications, and whether your pharmacy is in network. 3. Check the provider directory on the carrier's own website for each doctor and hospital you listed. Networks can change year to year, even in a plan that is renewing. 4. Read the plan's Summary of Benefits for extras you actually use — dental, vision, hearing, over-the-counter allowances, transportation. If a benefit matters to you, confirm it is in the plan documents, not just the ad. 5. If you have a current plan, read the ANOC your insurer mailed in September. It spells out what is changing for 2027. 6. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (24/7) or the plan itself if anything is unclear.

If you do nothing by December 7, 2026, your current plan simply renews for 2027 — as long as it is still being offered — with the changes described in the ANOC.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't a new Medicare Advantage plan have a Star Rating?
CMS Star Ratings measure a plan's past performance on things like customer service, member experience and chronic-condition care. A brand-new plan does not have that history yet, so it will not carry a rating in its first year. That is normal and has nothing to do with the plan's quality — it just means you cannot use ratings as a shortcut.
If I switch to a new plan and it does not work out, am I stuck?
No. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 – March 31, 2027. During that window, if you are in a Medicare Advantage plan you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan once, or go back to Original Medicare (and add a stand-alone Part D plan). You cannot use it to switch from Original Medicare into Medicare Advantage.
How do I know which Special Needs Plan I qualify for?
C-SNPs require a qualifying chronic condition (such as diabetes, heart disease or chronic kidney disease); D-SNPs require Medicaid eligibility along with Medicare; and I-SNPs require living in — or needing the level of care provided in — a facility such as a nursing home. The plan or 1-800-MEDICARE can confirm whether you qualify before you enroll.
What if my current plan is not on the 2027 list at all?
Fourteen plans offered in Marion County for 2026 are not returning for 2027. If yours is one of them, your carrier is required to notify you, and you get a Special Enrollment Period to choose a new plan. Use that time to compare options on medicare.gov against your own doctors and prescriptions. ## Where to go for the official answers For plan-specific details — premiums, networks, formularies, extras — go straight to the source: **medicare.gov** — the Plan Finder lets you compare every 2027 plan available in your ZIP code. **1-800-MEDICARE** (1-800-633-4227), 24 hours a day, seven days a week; TTY 1-877-486-2048. **The plan's own Evidence of Coverage, Summary of Benefits and provider directory**, available on the carrier's website. The Annual Enrollment Period ends December 7, 2026. There is time to compare carefully — including any of the 15 new plans — against the doctors you see and the medications you take.
