Key takeaways

  • Massachusetts has 97 Medicare Advantage plans listed statewide for 2027 from 12 carriers, and all 97 include drug coverage.
  • 22 plans are new for 2027 and 28 are not returning, so even if you like your current plan, read the Annual Notice of Change you receive this fall.
  • Availability is county by county, so compare only the plans offered where you live using the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov.
  • The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, and any change you make takes effect January 1, 2027.

Because Medicare Advantage is sold county by county, the statewide count is a starting point, not a shopping list. A plan listed for Massachusetts may or may not be offered where you live. The practical task is to pull up the plans available in your own county and compare them on the things you actually use.

The statewide numbers for 2027

The CMS Landscape file for CY2027 lists 97 Medicare Advantage plans in Massachusetts from 12 carriers. All 97 include Part D prescription drug coverage. Compared with CY2026, 22 plans are new for 2027 and 28 plans are not returning. That year-over-year churn is one reason the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) that current members receive in September matters: it spells out what changes for your specific plan in January, or whether your plan is leaving the market.

Statewide totals do not tell you what you will see in your own ZIP code. A rural county in western Massachusetts and a dense urban county around Boston can show very different menus of plans. The counts in this article are statewide, from CMS; your personal choices are a subset of them.

Plan types and Special Needs Plans

Across the 97 plans listed for Massachusetts in 2027, the type breakdown is:

Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are a separate category of Medicare Advantage designed for people who meet specific eligibility rules. For 2027, Massachusetts has 17 Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) for people with both Medicare and Medicaid (MassHealth), 1 Chronic Condition SNP (C-SNP), and 0 Institutional SNPs (I-SNPs). SNPs have their own enrollment rules; if you think you may qualify for a D-SNP, confirm your MassHealth status before you enroll.

The table on this page lists each plan with its type and SNP status so you can filter them.

The carriers offering plans in Massachusetts for 2027

Twelve carriers are listed in the CMS Landscape file for Massachusetts in 2027. In alphabetical order, with the number of plans each one offers statewide:

Several carriers also offer D-SNPs within those totals, including both Commonwealth Care Alliance entities, Fallon Health, Mass General Brigham Health Plan, Molina Healthcare of Massachusetts, Tufts Health Plan, and UnitedHealthcare. Again, how many of these carriers' plans actually appear in your county depends on where you live.

A step-by-step way to compare plans in your own county

The Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov is the authoritative tool for county-level comparisons. A workable sequence:

1. Make a list of your doctors and hospitals, your current prescriptions with dosages, and the pharmacies you use (including mail order). 2. Go to medicare.gov/plan-compare, enter your ZIP code, and choose "Medicare Advantage Plan." 3. Enter your drugs and preferred pharmacies when prompted. The tool uses this to calculate your estimated yearly drug cost on each plan. 4. For each plan you are considering, confirm your doctors and hospitals in the plan's own provider directory. Networks change year to year; the Plan Finder is a starting point, not the final word on networks. 5. Read the Annual Notice of Change your current plan mailed you in September. It lists what is changing for 2027 — premium, cost sharing, drug tier placement, or whether the plan is being discontinued. 6. If you want the detail behind a plan, request or download its Evidence of Coverage (EOC) from the carrier. 7. Note which plan type each option is — HMO, HMO-POS, or PPO — because the referral and out-of-network rules differ.

Do this plan by plan, in your own county. Statewide counts tell you how big the field is; the Plan Finder tells you what is on your menu.

What to do before December 7

December 7, 2026 is the last day of the Annual Enrollment Period for coverage that starts January 1, 2027. Between October 15 and December 7, you can:

If you are satisfied with your current plan and the ANOC does not show changes that affect you, you do not have to do anything; most plans renew automatically. If your plan is one of the 28 not returning for 2027, you will need to pick a new one to keep Medicare Advantage coverage.
