What Blue Cross and Blue Shield is offering in Bernalillo County for 2027

Albuquerque is in Bernalillo County, where Medicare Advantage availability is set. For plan year 2027, Blue Cross and Blue Shield has three plans here. All three include Part D prescription drug coverage.

The table below lists every plan. In alphabetical order, they are:

By plan type, that is one HMO and two HMO-POS plans. Two are Special Needs Plans, both D-SNPs for people with Medicare and Medicaid. There are no C-SNPs (chronic condition) or I-SNPs (institutional) in this lineup.

What is new, what is renamed, and what is not returning

Compared with 2026, this is a sizeable reshuffle:

If you are enrolled in a plan that is not returning, Blue Cross is required to send you a non-renewal notice. You then have a Special Enrollment Period to pick a new plan. If your plan is renewing, you will instead receive an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) by late September — that document is the single best place to see what, specifically, is changing about your plan for 2027.

How to check a plan against your doctors and prescriptions

Before December 7, it is worth doing three checks for any plan you are considering:

1. Doctors and hospitals. Look up each provider in the plan's 2027 directory, or call the office and ask directly whether they will accept that specific plan next year. A PPO, HMO and HMO-POS each handle out-of-network care differently, so network rules matter. 2. Prescriptions. Enter every medication — exact name, dose and quantity — into the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov/plan-compare. The tool shows the plan's formulary tier, any restrictions, and your estimated yearly drug cost under that plan. 3. The ANOC, cover to cover. If your current plan is renewing, read what is changing: premium, deductible, copays, drug tiers, and extra benefits can all shift from one year to the next.

For D-SNP eligibility, you must have both Medicare and full or partial Medicaid in New Mexico. The New Mexico Human Services Department confirms Medicaid status.

What the 2027 numbers mean for your drug costs

A few Part D figures are already confirmed for 2027:

The coverage gap ("donut hole") is gone — Part D has three phases now. If drug costs are hard to manage month to month, every Part D plan must offer the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which spreads your out-of-pocket drug costs across the plan year.

The 2027 Part B standard premium and deductible, and the 2027 IRMAA income brackets, have not yet been announced. CMS typically publishes them in the fall, usually November.

If you do nothing

Nothing happens to a person who does nothing: your current plan renews for 2027 if it is still offered, with the changes described in the ANOC. If your plan is one of the nine Blue Cross plans not returning, you will need to choose a different plan — either another Blue Cross plan, a plan from one of the six other Medicare Advantage carriers in the county, or Original Medicare with a stand-alone Part D plan.
