Key takeaways

  • Ohio has 180 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027 from 20 carriers, and all 180 include drug coverage.
  • 31 plans are new for 2027 and 63 plans from 2026 are not returning, so it is worth checking whether your current plan is still offered in your county.
  • The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, and the choice you make takes effect January 1, 2027.
  • Use the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE to compare the specific plans offered in your county.

The numbers below are statewide totals. Medicare Advantage is sold county by county, so a plan listed for Ohio may or may not be offered where you live. The tables elsewhere on this page show the full carrier and plan lists; this article walks through how to read them and how to compare the plans available in your own county.

The statewide numbers for 2027

According to the CMS Medicare Advantage Landscape Source Files for CY2027, Ohio has 180 Medicare Advantage plans offered by 20 carriers. All 180 plans include prescription drug coverage. Compared with CY2026, 31 plans are new for 2027 and 63 plans are not returning for 2027.

Those year-over-year numbers matter for anyone already enrolled. If your 2026 plan is among the 63 not returning, you will need to pick a different plan for 2027 or you will fall back to Original Medicare. If your plan is continuing, it may still be changing — which is where the Annual Notice of Change comes in, below.

Plan types and Special Needs Plans

The 180 plans break down by type as follows: 83 HMO plans, 50 HMO-POS plans, and 47 PPO plans. In plain terms, HMOs generally expect you to use an in-network provider and often require a referral; HMO-POS plans add some out-of-network flexibility; PPOs typically allow you to see out-of-network providers, often at a different cost share. The specifics vary plan by plan and should be confirmed in each plan's Evidence of Coverage.

Ohio also has Special Needs Plans (SNPs) for 2027: 11 D-SNPs for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, 24 C-SNPs for people with qualifying chronic conditions, and 11 I-SNPs for people living in or needing an institutional level of care. SNPs have eligibility rules, so not everyone can enroll, and availability still depends on your county.

The carriers

Twenty carriers are offering Medicare Advantage plans in Ohio for 2027. The full carrier table on this page lists each one in alphabetical order with its plan count and plan types. Some carriers offer a single plan in a limited area — for example, American Health Advantage of Indiana and Valor Health Plan each list one plan — while others, such as UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Devoted Health, Aetna (CVS Health), Medical Mutual of Ohio, and Elevance Health (Anthem), carry larger statewide counts. Several carriers participate specifically through Special Needs Plans, including CareSource MyCare Ohio, Centene (WellCare), Molina Healthcare of Ohio, and some of the D-SNP plans listed under Elevance Health (Anthem).

Carrier plan counts are a statewide figure, not a county figure. A carrier with many plans in Ohio may offer only one or two in your ZIP code, and a smaller carrier may be a good fit in your county if it is offered there.

How to compare the plans in your own county

A fair comparison takes about an hour. Here is a step-by-step way to do it:

1. Make a list of your doctors and hospitals. Include primary care, specialists, and the hospital system you prefer. 2. Make a list of your prescriptions. Write down each drug name, dose, and how often you take it. 3. Note your preferred pharmacies, including whether you use mail order. 4. Pull out your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, your plan mailed this to you by late September. It explains what is changing for 2027 in premium, cost sharing, drug list, and extras. 5. Open the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov. Enter your ZIP code and your drug list. The Plan Finder will show the Medicare Advantage plans offered in your county for 2027, with each plan's specifics. 6. Check each candidate plan's provider directory to confirm your doctors and hospitals are in network. 7. Check each plan's drug formulary and pharmacy network for your prescriptions and preferred pharmacy. 8. Read the Evidence of Coverage for the plan you are leaning toward before you enroll.

The Plan Finder and each plan's own documents are the authoritative source for premiums, deductibles, copays, benefits, networks, drug lists, and star ratings. This article does not list any of those details for any plan.

What to do before December 7

You do not need to rush, but you do need a date on the calendar. The Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. Any Medicare Advantage election you make during that window takes effect January 1, 2027. If you do nothing and your current plan is continuing, you will generally stay in it under its 2027 terms. If your plan is among the 63 not returning for 2027, you will need to make a choice to keep Medicare Advantage coverage.

A short checklist for the next few weeks: read your ANOC; update your drug and provider lists; run your ZIP code through the Plan Finder; and, if you plan to switch, enroll by December 7, 2026.

Free help

Two free resources are available to every Ohio Medicare beneficiary. The Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov lets you compare the plans offered in your county, with your drugs and pharmacies loaded in. 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and the representative can walk through plans with you on the phone.
