EL PASO, Texas — As the Annual Enrollment Period opens this fall, the Medicare Advantage menu in El Paso County is shifting again. For plan year 2027, 16 Medicare Advantage plans are new to the county, 18 will not be offered again, and 19 are coming back under a different name. Everything else — 54 plans — continues largely as it did, though 29 of those have at least one change on premium, deductible, type or name that is worth a careful read.

The 2026 starting point in El Paso County
For the current year, El Paso County has 91 Medicare Advantage plans from 12 carriers. Among them, 43 are HMOs, 16 are HMO-POS, 30 are PPOs and 2 are PFFS. All 91 include drug coverage, and 39 are Special Needs Plans (SNPs) built for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid, who live with certain chronic conditions, or who live in an institutional setting.

A note on the Elevance and UnitedHealthcare lists: some plan names appear on both the "leaving" and "new" lists (for example, Wellpoint Dual Advantage and UHC Dual Complete TX-S4). That generally reflects a contract or plan ID change at CMS rather than a continuous plan carrying forward. If one of those names is on your card today, treat it as a non-renewal and read your Annual Notice of Change carefully — your 2027 plan is a different filing, which can mean different costs or networks.
If your plan is leaving: your Special Enrollment Period
When a Medicare Advantage plan is not offered the next year, the member gets a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) separate from the regular Annual Enrollment Period. You can use it to join a different Medicare Advantage plan or go back to Original Medicare and add a stand-alone Part D drug plan. The SEP runs from December 8, 2026 through the end of February 2027, which gives you time past the December 7 deadline. Your carrier is required to send you a non-renewal letter explaining your rights.
If you do nothing and your plan isn't offered, you'll be returned to Original Medicare on January 1, 2027 — without drug coverage until you take action. That's why the SEP matters.
Renames and other changes to watch
Nineteen plans continuing into 2027 have new names. Among them: Aetna's dual-eligible lineup has been renamed (for example, what was Aetna Medicare Dual Care is now Aetna Medicare Full Dual Care); several Alignment Health plans added numbered identifiers; Wellcare Dual Access and Wellcare Dual Reserve are now Wellcare Superior HealthPlan Dual Access and Wellcare Superior HealthPlan Dual Reserve; and UHC Medicare Advantage TX-0030 is now AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC TX-61. A rename does not necessarily mean a different plan — but 29 continuing plans have a change on premium, deductible, type or name worth checking in the Annual Notice of Change your insurer mails every September.
