LEXINGTON, Ky. — As the fall 2026 Annual Enrollment Period opens, 11 Medicare Advantage plans sold in Fayette County this year will not be offered again in 2027, according to the CMS Medicare Advantage Landscape Source Files for the current and coming plan years. If you are enrolled in one of them, your insurer is required to send you a non-renewal letter — and the choice you make (or don't make) between now and early 2027 will shape your coverage on Jan. 1.

Here is who is affected, how to recognize the letter, and the enrollment windows that apply only to people in a non-renewed plan.

Which Medicare Advantage plans are not returning in Lexington for 2027?

In Fayette County — the county Lexington sits in — 11 Medicare Advantage plans available in 2026 are not in CMS's 2027 Landscape file. Two carriers account for the full list: Centene (WellCare), Humana and UnitedHealthcare.

The plans not returning for 2027, in alphabetical order by carrier:

Fayette County will still have 66 Medicare Advantage plans from 9 carriers offered for 2027. The table on this page lists every plan available, so you can see what remains alongside what is leaving.

How can I tell if my Lexington plan sent a non-renewal letter?

If your plan is ending, your insurer is required to mail you a written non-renewal notice — typically by early October 2026, before the Annual Enrollment Period opens on Oct. 15.

The letter usually arrives in a plain envelope from your current plan and may be titled "Plan Non-Renewal Notice," "Plan Termination Notice," or similar language. It will say the plan will not be offered in your area in 2027, give the last day of coverage (Dec. 31, 2026), and explain your options. It is a separate mailing from the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), which members of continuing plans receive each September describing next year's changes.

If you think you may have missed it, call the member services number on the back of your current plan ID card, or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), TTY 1-877-486-2048.

What happens in Lexington if I do nothing after my plan ends?

If your Medicare Advantage plan is non-renewed and you take no action, you will be enrolled in Original Medicare — Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) — on Jan. 1, 2027.

Two things to understand about that default:

What are my choices and when can I make them?

You have three main paths, and you have more time than the standard Dec. 7 deadline most people face.

1. Choose a different Medicare Advantage plan for 2027 (one of the 66 offered in Fayette County next year). 2. Stay with Original Medicare and add a stand-alone Part D drug plan. 3. Stay with Original Medicare, add a Part D plan, and apply for a Medigap policy.

Three enrollment windows apply:

What is changing in Lexington's 2027 Medicare lineup overall?

For plan year 2027, Fayette County will have 66 Medicare Advantage plans from 9 carriers. Alongside the 11 plans not returning, CMS files show 12 new plans and 9 renamed plans for the county.

For continuing plans, the specifics of 2027 changes — provider networks, drug lists, cost sharing and extra benefits — appear in each plan's Annual Notice of Change, which members receive by late September 2026. Even if your plan is returning, it is worth reading.

A few program-wide figures to keep in mind as you compare drug coverage:

Frequently asked questions

When will I receive my non-renewal letter if my Lexington plan is ending?
Insurers are generally required to mail non-renewal notices to affected members by early October 2026, before the Annual Enrollment Period begins on Oct. 15. If you believe you should have received one and did not, call the member services number on your plan ID card or 1-800-MEDICARE.
If my Medicare Advantage plan ends on Dec. 31, 2026, will I have any coverage on Jan. 1?
Yes. If you take no action, you will automatically be enrolled in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) on Jan. 1, 2027. However, Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage, so you would need to enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan or a new Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage to keep that benefit.
How long do I have to pick a new plan if mine is not returning?
In addition to the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, 2026), people whose Medicare Advantage plan is non-renewed have a Special Enrollment Period that runs from Dec. 8, 2026 through Feb. 28, 2027 to join another Medicare Advantage plan or a stand-alone Part D plan.
Can I buy a Medigap policy without medical underwriting if my plan leaves?
At the federal level, losing Medicare Advantage coverage because the plan is no longer offered in your area generally triggers a Medigap guaranteed-issue right, with limits on which policies and how long you have to apply. Kentucky may have additional protections; the Kentucky Department of Insurance can confirm what applies to you.
