What Anthem is offering in Austin for 2027
Austin is in Travis County, where plan availability is set. For 2027, Anthem (which CMS groups under Elevance Health) is offering 6 Medicare Advantage plans in the county. All 6 include Part D prescription drug coverage. By plan type, 3 are HMOs and 3 are HMO-POS plans.
Five of the six plans are Special Needs Plans (SNPs), which are built for people in specific situations:
- 3 Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNPs) for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid.
- 2 Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans (C-SNPs) for people living with certain long-term conditions.
- No Institutional Special Needs Plans (I-SNPs).
The table below lists every Anthem plan available in Travis County next year, with the plan type and drug coverage.
What is new, and what is not coming back
Three Anthem plans are new for 2027, and all three are D-SNPs: Wellpoint Dual Advantage, Wellpoint Dual Advantage Plus, and Wellpoint Full Dual Advantage. These are only for people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid.
One Anthem plan offered in 2026 is not returning in 2027. If you are enrolled in a plan that will not be offered next year, your plan will send a non-renewal notice, and you have a Special Enrollment Period to choose a new plan.
The plans staying on the shelf, under the same names, include Wellpoint Chronic Care (HMO-POS C-SNP), Wellpoint Kidney Care (HMO-POS C-SNP), and Wellpoint Medicare Advantage 2 (HMO-POS). Even when a plan name does not change, benefits, copays, networks and drug lists can — those details show up in the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) your plan mails each fall.
How to check a plan against your doctors and prescriptions
Before December 7, 2026, it is worth taking 20 minutes to do three things:
1. Open your ANOC. Your current plan mails this packet in late September. It spells out what is changing for 2027 compared with 2026. 2. Check your doctors and hospitals. Call the plan or search its online provider directory for each doctor you want to keep. Networks can change year to year. 3. Check your prescriptions. Use the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov. Type in each drug, dose and pharmacy, and the tool will show which plans cover them and what tier they are on. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE for help.
If you take Part D drugs, two 2027 figures matter. The Part D out-of-pocket cap rises to $2,400 in 2027 (up from $2,100 in 2026). The maximum Part D deductible a plan can charge rises to $700 in 2027 (up from $615 in 2026). The coverage gap, or "donut hole," was eliminated in 2025.
Special Needs Plans: who qualifies
Most of Anthem's 2027 Austin lineup is made up of SNPs, so eligibility matters.
- D-SNPs require that you have both Medicare and Medicaid. Three of Anthem's 2027 plans are D-SNPs.
- C-SNPs require a qualifying chronic condition — kidney disease and certain other diagnoses are common examples. Anthem offers two C-SNPs here.
If you are not sure whether you qualify for Medicaid in Texas, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission can tell you. If you do not qualify for either an SNP category, you would look at a general Medicare Advantage plan instead — Anthem offers one HMO-POS in Travis County, Wellpoint Medicare Advantage 2.
