What Wellcare is offering in Bexar County for 2027

San Antonio is in Bexar County, where Medicare Advantage availability is set. For 2027, Wellcare's county lineup is six plans, all HMOs, and all include Part D drug coverage. Four of the six are D-SNPs, which are built for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid.

The six Wellcare plans available to Bexar County residents for 2027 are (in alphabetical order):

The table below lists every plan with its type and whether it carries drug coverage.

What is new, what is renamed, and what is not returning

Four Wellcare plans that were offered in Bexar County for 2026 are not returning for 2027. If you are enrolled in one of them, your plan will send you a non-renewal notice, and you have a Special Enrollment Period to pick a different plan. Watch the mail in October for either an ANOC (your plan is continuing with changes) or a non-renewal letter (your plan is ending).

Two plans in the 2027 lineup are new: Wellcare Superior HealthPlan Dual Liberty (HMO D-SNP) and Wellcare Superior HealthPlan Dual Reserve Value (HMO D-SNP). Both are D-SNPs, so they are only an option if you also qualify for Medicaid.

Two plans kept their structure but got a new name: Wellcare Superior HealthPlan Dual Access (HMO D-SNP) was Wellcare Dual Access (HMO D-SNP), and Wellcare Superior HealthPlan Dual Reserve (HMO D-SNP) was Wellcare Dual Reserve (HMO D-SNP). A rename is not automatically a benefit change — the specifics are in the ANOC.

HMO, PPO, and Special Needs Plans — what the labels mean

Every Wellcare plan in the 2027 Bexar County lineup is an HMO. In an HMO, you generally need to use the plan's network of doctors and hospitals (emergencies aside), and some plans ask you to pick a primary care doctor who coordinates specialist referrals. Wellcare is not offering a PPO in the county for 2027.

Four of the six plans are D-SNPs. D-SNPs are for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, and enrollment depends on your Medicaid status. Wellcare is not offering a C-SNP (chronic condition) or I-SNP (institutional) plan in the county for 2027.

All six plans include Part D prescription drug coverage, so you would not add a stand-alone Part D plan on top.

How to check a plan against your doctors and prescriptions

Before you choose, line each plan up against three things that are personal to you:

1. Your doctors and hospitals. Look up each plan's provider directory on Wellcare's site, or call the plan directly, and confirm your primary care doctor, specialists, and preferred hospital are in-network for 2027. 2. Your prescriptions. Pull up the plan's 2027 formulary (drug list) and check every medication you take by name and dose. Confirm the pharmacy you use is a preferred or network pharmacy. 3. Your total cost picture. The Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov lets you enter your drugs and preferred pharmacy and see each plan's estimated yearly cost side by side.

The fastest way to do all three in one place is the Plan Finder at medicare.gov/plan-compare, or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048), which is open 24/7.

2027 program changes worth knowing

A few numbers for 2027 that apply across Part D plans, not just Wellcare's:

CMS has not yet announced the 2027 Part B standard premium and deductible, or the 2027 IRMAA income brackets. Those usually come out in the fall, typically November. We will update coverage when CMS releases them.

What happens if I do nothing by December 7?
If your current Wellcare plan is being offered again in 2027, it will renew automatically on January 1, 2027, with any changes described in the Annual Notice of Change your plan sent in September or October. How do I know if a specific Wellcare plan covers my doctor or my medication?
Use the plan's own 2027 provider directory and formulary — both are on the carrier's website — or run your doctors, drugs, and pharmacy through the Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov/plan-compare. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE for help.
Who can enroll in a D-SNP?
Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plans are limited to people who have both Medicare and Medicaid. Four of Wellcare's six 2027 plans in Bexar County are D-SNPs. If you are not sure whether you qualify for Medicaid in Texas, contact Texas Health and Human Services or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
Can I switch plans after December 7?
The Annual Enrollment Period ends December 7, 2026. If you end up in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1, 2027, you also get the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31, 2027, when you can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare one time.
